Why We Love This Copycat Recipe

Hula Pie is a decadent macadamia nut ice cream pie resting in an Oreo crumb pie crust, and slathered with layers of hot fudge, whipped cream, and roasted macadamia nuts.

Do I have your attention now?

This pie was originally created at Kimo’s restaurant in Maui, but was made popular by the Duke’s restaurant chain all throughout Hawaii and in California as well. We recently had it on a vacation to Maui at the Hula Grill, one of Duke’s sister restaurants in Old Lahaina Town.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe, Too!

Because most people do not own an ice cream maker, and macadamia nut ice cream is hard to come by at the grocery store, we’ve made a cheaters version of no-churn ice cream using whipped heavy cream and sweetened condensed milk as the base. Then we stirred in chopped roasted macadamia nuts and a little bit of nut extract as well. The result is fabulous quick-made ice cream without an ice cream maker.

Also, we made our Oreo cookie crust from scratch. However, if you’re in a hurry feel free to buy an Oreo crust at the grocery store.

This cold and chocolatey no-bake dessert is always a hit at summertime celebrations, if you are able to share. Make it the day before the festivities and be sure to save yourself an extra slice (or two) before serving to your soon-to-be happy guests!
