Ten bedrooms with balconies that bring the outside in (2024)

A Californian beachfront house and a cottage in Perth are among the homes in our latest lookbook, which features 10 bedrooms that open out onto balconies.

Balconies add an extra dimension to any home, providing bonus outdoor space while also making rooms feel much larger by coaxing in natural light.

In bedrooms, they can also create romantic spots from which to enjoy views of forests, hills, sea or streets, as shown by the 10 examples listed below.

Surf House, USA, by Feldman Architecture

The master suite of this Californian beachfront dwelling designed by Feldman Architecture features floor-to-ceiling glass walls that open onto a private balcony with views of the surfers below.

In addition, the balcony helps to bring shades of blue and green into the room, complementing the neutral colour palette picked out by Los Angeles firm Commune Design.

Royal, USA, by William Kaven Architecture

US studio William Kaven Architecture added an expansive double-aspect balcony to this bedroom in a black house standing on the hillside of anOregon forest.

The feature was a crucial part of the design idea, which firm partner Daniel Kaven explained was "to live among the trees."

AdH House, Mexico, by Francesc Rifé Studio

Black aluminium shutters allow the balcony of this bedroom, in a house in Mexico City designed by Spanish practiceFrancesc Rifé Studio, to be closed off for privacy when not in use.

That corresponds with the room's moody yet tranquil theme, with furniture fromItalian brand Cassinain addition to custom pieces made by local designerSimon Hamui.

Seven Lives, Spain, by Anna and Eugeni Bach

This bedroom is in a small Barcelona apartment block designed by architects Anna and Eugeni Bach, which is characterised on the outside by vibrant yellow balconies bursting through the grey-beige stucco facade.

The same effect has been deployed for the interiors in the example pictured above, with neutral tones and raw finishes contrasting with the bright doors, drawing the eye outside.

116 Sorauren, Canada, by Ancerl Studio

French doors open through a glazed wall onto the balcony of this bedroom, on the top level of a single-pitched house in Toronto designed byCanadian firmAncerl Studio.

A weathered brick feature wall combines with the black metal of the glazed wall to give the room a subtly industrial feel.

Ridgewood, USA, by Henry Hill and Framestudio

Glass walls flood this bedroom in a house near San Francisco with natural light, while a set of doors enable occupants to step outside for a better look at the surrounding Alamo hills.

The mid-century housewas originally built by Bay Area architect Henry Hill and was renovated by design collective Framestudio with the intention of "creating a peaceful sanctuary, inspired by the natural surroundings on the other side of those big panes of glass," according to studio founder Chad DeWitt.

Marine, Australia, by David Barr Architects

A huge glazed panel set in a timber frame takes up almost an entire wall of this white-painted bedroom, in a cottage near Perth that was given a bright extension byDavid Barr Architects.

The panel can be slid back to grant access to a small outdoor terrace with views of the Indian Ocean.

Woorak House, Australia, by CM Studio

One section of the wall has been cut away in this bedroom to create a small corner balcony with views of the surrounding Sydney coastline.

CM Studio filled the gap with glazed sliding doors that can be pushed back to open up the space to the landscape, while gauzy white curtains combine with pale limestone flooring and the pitched ceiling's white-painted beams to elicit an airy, Mediterranean feel.

Lookout House, USA, by Faulkner Architects

On the top floor of the aptly named Lookout House by Faulkner Architects, a large bedroom suite opens entirely at one end onto a spacious terrace with panoramic views across the Californian valley below.

Inside the bedroom, the muted tones of concrete walls and walnut wood ceilings contrast with the magma-like glow cast by a slender red-coloured window.

Wasatch House, USA, by Olson Kundig

US architecture firmOlson Kundig gave the master bedroom of this house in Utah a generous balcony to take advantage of the nearby Mount Olympus.

Furnishings and finishes on the interior were chosen to match the hues of the surrounding forested landscape of Salt Lake City.
