Does Walgreens do a 2 step TB test? ›

A rapid sputum tests is used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) when other tests show that a person probably has TB. Rapid sputum tests are also called nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). One of the best ways to diagnose TB is through a sputum culture.

Can I use the tuberculosis test kits at home? The tuberculosis test kit cannot be used at home as the kit requires a blood sample from the patient, which should be acquired according to official safety procedures by a qualified professional.

The two-step TB skin test can lower the chance that a boosted reaction from an old TB infection will be misinterpreted as a recent infection. If the reaction to the first-step TB skin test is classified as negative, a second-step TB skin test is given one to three weeks after the first test is read.

If you have a negative skin test, you need a repeat test at least once every four years. If you have a documented positive skin test, you must have an initial chest X-ray. After that, you still need to be screened every four years.

Interpreting test results. The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration by a health care worker trained to read TB skin results. If a patient has symptoms of TB disease, health care providers should not wait for TB skin test results before starting other diagnostic tests.

Skin test. A tiny amount of a substance called tuberculin is injected just below the skin on the inside of one forearm. Within 48 to 72 hours, a health care worker will check your arm for swelling at the injection site. The size of the raised skin is used to determine a positive or negative test.

For the test, a health care worker will take some blood (less than a teaspoon) from your vein. The blood is then sent to a lab for testing. How soon will I have my test result? The test result will be available in 5–7 days.

If you are diagnosed with pulmonary TB, you will be contagious up to about 2 to 3 weeks into your course of treatment. You will not normally need to be isolated during this time, but it's important to take some basic precautions to stop TB spreading to your family and friends.

People with inactive TB do not feel sick, do not have symptoms, and cannot spread TB germs to others. Without treatment, inactive TB can develop into active TB disease at any time and make you sick.

If you have no symptoms but are at risk from TB (for example, you've been in close contact with someone who has TB) you may have a Mantoux test or blood tests to check if you have it. A Mantoux test is a skin test where a small amount of liquid is injected under the skin in your arm.

A positive test result for TB infection means you have TB germs in your body. If you test positive for TB infection, your health care provider will do other tests to determine if you have inactive TB (also called latent TB infection) or active TB disease.

Best practice indicates that a two-step tuberculin skin test (TST) involves two tests performed within one to four weeks of each other. The second test can be completed up to one year from the first test, provided there has not been an exposure to infectious tuberculosis (TB) disease during that time period.

What does a positive TB test look like? A positive TB skin test will look like a firm, red bump. Your provider will measure the size of the firmness of the bump (induration). Your provider considers your particular risk factors to determine the results of your test.

After the test, you should avoid using bandages, putting on lotion, or scratching the test area because it may affect the results. You can wash the area with water, but do not wipe or scrub. If the area itches, put an ice cube or cold cloth on it.
