Essential Oils for Bedtime: Bedtime Spray Recipe with Free Printables (2024)

One of the first ways I started using my oils was to help me and my boys fall asleep. I truly believe in the power of lavender to help at bedtime! I originally put a few drops behind our ears and on the back of our necks but now I have made a bedtime spray. This spray works great and easier to use!

I made a couple different labels for the bottle so you can use them! My boys like the Monster Be Gone Label!

Ingredients

  • Small Spray Bottle (4 0z)
  • Distilled Water
  • 1 1/2 Tbl Witch Hazel or vodka
  • 6-10 Drops Various Essential Oils

Directions:

  1. Fill the bottle with water and the witch hazel into the spray bottle and shake. The witch hazel will help the essential oils to disperse evenly and not settle at the bottom.
  2. Add your Essential Oils and shake gently.
  3. Shake before each use.
  4. Spray the air, bed, pillow, sheets, windows, favorite stuffed animal…

For my spray blend I usually do 10 drops of Lavender but there are so many blends you can make! Here are 2 popular blends.

We have “Bad Guy Spray” at or house. It is so good, that it not only keeps the bad guys away, but if they happen to be nearby when it is sprayed, they will become Good Guys! It is great! My 3 girls love it. I have a ritual of spraying each bed (3 in the same room) the closet, the window, the center of the room, the ladder for the bunk bed, the trash can and then the doorway as I close the door. They love it. Mine is a bit more diluted so that is why I spray more. I have it in the 4 oz bottle, and I use 2-3 drops of OnGuard, to keep germs away, 2-3 of Lavender, to get them sleepy, 1-2 Vetiver, for extra sleepiness, and it does a great job. I use this straight on my feet, and lastly1-2 drops of citrus of some kind, those are happy oils, I don’t want to use much since I don’t want to wake them up too. Then I fill the whole rest of the bottles with water. Then I shake every time, and, when it starts to get low, just below half, I will add some water, but not everything else. I will usually dilute for about a month, then I will make a fresh batch. If anyone happens to be sick, with a head cold then I will add breathe, if they have a headache then I add in peppermint. Some kids need it to come from somewhere, but mine were happy that I looked for a recipe online. This way I can try out different recipes, and it is ok if it doesn’t always smell exactly the same since it isn’t made by a company, but I heard one mom say that she had to order it from the Netherlands and that it was very expensive, which if you don’t want to do it for long then this would be a good way to limit it, but I figured there wasn’t a need in my case.

I absolutely love this idea! I don’t have any oils as of yet, however, I’ve been hearing so many good things about them that I do want to start. When my kids were all little, I would buy the sleepy bath time with lavender in it to help calm them down before bed. I had a baby cream which also contained lavender in it and I would put a little on their neck and their pillows to help them sleep. Since they are no longer babies anymore, I’ve stopped. However, I sure could use some recipe to help me when it comes to sleeping! I appreciate the recipe and all the information you provided us with on these essential oils! I will be getting some soon, I hope! Thanks again, Michele 🙂

Maria, I used Avery Print – To – The – Edge Rectangular Labels, Glossy Clear, 2 x 3 Inches, 80 Labels (22822). The clear didn’t work on the this particular bottle, so I put the label on a white piece of paper and then cut out and used double sided tape.

Hello Denise, the witch hazel is not a carrier oil it just helps the essential oils to disperse evenly and not settle at the bottom. It is optional but I would shake the bottle well before each use if you do not.
