The Mudslide is one of the best sweet co*cktails out there! This drink’s traditional version couldn’t be more sophisticated…or delicious! Shake with coffee liqueur and Irish cream, then strain into a co*cktail glass. It’s more than just a glorified milkshake: it’s sophisticated and intriguing! You may also make it frozen by blending it with vanilla ice cream.

The term “Mudslide” may conjure up images of milkshake-style drunken beverages served at chain restaurants. But have you ever had a traditional Mudslide? It couldn’t be more sophisticated…or tasty! You may prepare this Mudslide recipe two ways: shaken with coffee liqueur and Irish cream and served in a co*cktail glass, or shaken with coffee liqueur and Irish cream and served in a co*cktail glass. It’s more than a basic milkshake: it’s sophisticated and intriguing! Of course, you may make it frozen by blending it with vanilla ice cream. Here’s how to make a Mudslide…both ways!

WHAT EXACTLY IS A MUDSLIDE?

The Mudslide co*cktail is a dessert co*cktail made with Kahlua and Irish cream that is a variant on the White Russian. It was invented in the mid-1970s on Grand Cayman Island at a pub named Wreck Bar. According to legend, a customer ordered a White Russian but the establishment was out of heavy cream. They happened to have some Irish cream on hand, so they used that instead, and the Mudslide was born! This co*cktail was then blended with ice cream and became popular in chain restaurants, where it’s more like a drunken milkshake. This beverage is known as a “frozen Mudslide.”

What are the components in the traditional Mudslide drink? How do I make the frozen version? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream
  • Heavy cream (traditional) or vanilla ice cream and ice (frozen)

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO MAKE A MUDSLIDE

  • Of course, as fans of handmade co*cktails, we love the classic Mudslide! But we can’t stop you from making a frozen Mudslide (aka boozy milkshake). What you’ll need to do for each variation is as follows:
  • In a co*cktail shaker, combine vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and heavy cream. Shake until very chilled, then pour into a co*cktail glass. Garnish with shaved chocolate if desired.
  • Frozen Mudslide: In a blender, combine vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, vanilla ice cream, and ice. Pour into a glass after blending until smooth. Decorate the interior of your glass with chocolate syrup in the style of the 1990s.

USE ANY COFFEE LIQUEUR, SUCH AS KAHLUA

A Mudslide can be made with any sort of coffee liqueur. Kahlua is the most popular variety. But what exactly is it? Here’s what you should know about this coffee liqueur and others:

  • Kahlua is a Mexican coffee liqueur created with rum, sugar, and coffee (no dairy!). It does contain caffeine, but only approximately a quarter of the amount found in the same volume of coffee.
  • What is the price of Kahlua? A large 750 ml bottle costs around $15 to $20.
  • What can I substitute for Kahlua? Tia Maria or Sheridan’s are two excellent coffee liqueurs to try.
  • What other drinks contain Kahlua? Make various Kahlua beverages with it, such as a White Russian, Black Russian, B-52, Mind Eraser, Colorado Bulldog, or Espresso Martini.

USE WHICHEVER IRISH CREAM YOU CHOOSE

What else is necessary for a Mudslide? Cream of Ireland! Irish cream is a cream-based liqueur prepared using Irish whiskey. The most well-known brand of Irish cream is Baileys Irish Cream, however there are numerous kinds available. This is the most popular co*cktail made with Irish cream. It can also be used to make Irish Cream co*cktails such as the Chocolate Martini, Coffee Martini, Baileys White Russian, B52, and others.

That’s all there is to it: how to make a Mudslide! Let us know in the comments whether you create the classic or frozen version.

MORE VODKA-BASED co*ckTAILS

  • There are so many other delicious vodka drinks to try! Here are a few more ways to use up a bottle of vodka… as if you required any!
  • Choose classics such as the Vodka Gimlet, Moscow Mule, or Cosmo.
  • Choose a revitalizing Vodka Tonic, Vodka Cranberry, or Vodka Spritzer.
  • Make a classic Bloody Mary for a classy brunch.
  • Try a Lemon Drop Martini, a Pomegranate Martini, a Cranberry Martini, or a French Martini.

HOW POWERFUL IS THE MUDSLIDE?

Though it seems sweet and innocent, the mudslide is almost as potent as a margarita. For example, the alcohol concentration of 80-proof vodka, Baileys, and Kahla is in the 29 percent ABV (58 proof) range. Because it’s so delicious, it’s easy to drink too many, and this one will creep up on you. Of course, adding milk or cream or blending the mudslide would make it significantly less potent.

IS THERE A VEGAN MUDSLIDE?

A mudslide contains dairy because it is made with Irish cream and coffee liqueur. Most coffee liqueurs, including Kahla, involve dairy, and heavy cream is a key ingredient in Irish cream liqueurs like Baileys. As a result, it is not a vegan co*cktail.

VARIATIONS ON A RECIPE

  • Irish cream is a must-have for bars, but you can experiment with other spirits as well. RumChata is an excellent example, and if you enjoy this dairy liqueur, you’ll enjoy it in your mudslide.
  • Some mudslides include two scoops of cream. Try it with 1 ounce of Irish cream liqueur and 1 1/2 ounces heavy cream for an extra-creamy drink.
  • Pour 1 ounce of each of the three distilled spirits into a blender to make a frozen mudslide. 1 ounce of milk or cream, followed by 1 cup of ice Blend until completely smooth. Pour it into a frosted hurricane glass and top with chocolate syrup.
  • For a special dessert, replace the milk or cream with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and reduce the ice to roughly 1/2 cup. Blend.
  • Layers of chocolate syrup make a magnificent frozen mudslide. Pour a tiny bit of the drink into your glass, then cover with syrup and another layer of mudslide. Continue in this manner until your glass is completely full.
  • If you replace the vodka with a blended Scotch whisky, you get the aggravation (or teacher’s pet). It is usually given a brief shake: Pour everything into a serving glass with ice, cover with a shaker tin, and shake vigorously. (If you don’t have a firm grip on both the glass and the tin, things could get messy.) It is possible to make it with cream, milk, or Irish cream.
  • Brandy also makes a wonderful mudslide version.
  • Build your drink in a glass and stir rather than shake for an on-the-rocks variant. This approach adds a touch more sharpness and decadence.

TIPS

  • Save your best vodka for vodka martinis. Instead, for this drink, look for a good, low-cost vodka.
  • Flavored vodkas also perform nicely in a mudslide. For extra sweetness and taste, choose an espresso, chocolate, raspberry, or cake-flavored vodka.
  • Pouring the mudslide over fresh ice is the simplest way to improve this simple drink. Agitation breaks down the ice in the shaker. If you put that ice in the glass, your drink will be diluted down by the time you’re halfway through it.
  • The ice in the glass should just keep the drink chilled while you enjoy it. Consider using ice balls or large cubes. The larger the ice, the slower it will melt and the less dilution your drink will experience.
  • Keeping your vodka bottle in the freezer will also help keep your beverage chilled when you make it.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

  • Vodka – The vodka doesn’t have to be particularly expensive or of excellent quality, but it should be something you enjoy.
  • I like to use Kahla as a coffee liqueur. It’s created with arabica coffee beans and Mexican sugar, so it’ll give you great coffee notes and sweetness for your mudslide.
  • Baileys Irish cream is my go-to Irish cream. This creamy liqueur enhances the flavors of chocolate and vanilla while also adding sweetness. Kerrygold’s Irish Cream is another excellent option.
  • Heavy cream – I wouldn’t recommend using milk because heavy cream adds a rich and creamy flavor to a classic mudslide.

HOW TO MAKE A MUDSLIDE

  • 1. Spread chocolate sauce on a dish and then coat the rim of a co*cktail glass in it. If desired, drizzle chocolate sauce within the glass.
  • 2. Combine the vodka and coffee liqueur in a co*cktail shaker.
  • 3. Pour in the Irish cream and heavy cream. Pour ice into the co*cktail shaker.
  • 4. Shake for about 20 seconds, or until the exterior is icy.
  • 5. Pour the mudslide into a co*cktail glass and serve.
  • 6. If preferred, garnish the drink with shaved chocolate.

PRO SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING THIS RECIPE

  • Espresso and chocolate vodkas, for example, work well in this mudslide recipe.
  • Do you lack a co*cktail shaker? You can strain through a mesh strainer into a mason jar or any jar with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Avoid adding crushed ice to the shaker because it will melt faster and dilute the co*cktail.
  • Place the vodka in the freezer for a cooler co*cktail. Because of the alcohol concentration, it will not freeze but will instead keep the drink cold.
  • Use a box grater to rapidly shave chocolate to decorate your mudslide.

WHERE DID THIS co*ckTAIL COME FROM?

When visitors asked for a White Russian but the bar didn’t have the ingredients, the Mudslide co*cktail was born at Wreck Bar in Rum Point Club on Grand Cayman Island. Instead, the bartender made do with what he had on hand, which included Irish cream. With a few changes, the drink eventually made its way to American eateries.

HOW DO I CREATE A FROZEN VERSION?

With comparable components, you may easily make a frozen mudslide. In a blender, combine vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream instead of heavy cream, and ice. For a frozen boozy milkshake treat, blend till smooth and top with whipped cream and shaved chocolate.

CAN I DO IT ON THE ROCKS?

You certainly can! Instead of mixing the co*cktail with ice, combine the ingredients and serve over ice.
