Blu B Aside from being set in London and having Wayne in it. There really isn't much to set this apart from other police crime dramas. The editing isn't that good because it feels like once Wanye arrives in London, stuff just happens. I know someone was kidnapped and he's trying to help the local officals get him back but that's it. The double cross, hired killers, motives and all that are very muddled because Wayne it feels like is forgotten about half the time. There are long stretches where things feel very dragged out and boring like the mail dropoff. The setting is memorable but it's just not shot that particulary well. The music isn't bad and probably the best thing about this but at times it feels like it sounds like every other 70's crime drama. Everything is just ok about it. The villian is just ok and super forgettable. This goes with the love interest as well. There are so many stunt double takes in this as well like Roger Moore in the later 007's It's also very cliche. Wayne is the loose cannon who doesn't play by the rules, the classic fish out of water setting, saving the day and getting the girl, it's all things we've seen done much better. Unless your a die hard John Wayne fan, skip this. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review John K I saw it when it came out in 75 and it was enjoyable enough, I wasnt expecting a masterpiece, and it wasnt, but watching JW as a fish out of water had enormous potential, and saddling him with a young female British cop was inspired casting, trouble was the script never really takes off. There is one enjoyable bar fight that could have taken place in a 50 Wayne westerns back in the day and there is good byplay between he and chief detective Richard Attenborrough, I just wish more could have been mined by the great disparity with the London location standing in for a China shop and Wayne the proverbial bull. Like I already wrote, it just never takes off. BTW, John Vernon, as usual, is terrific in an underwritten supporting role. Sean Connery was able to pull it off where John Wayne could not. It's a western that's disguised as a cop movie in London. There is even a saloon fight scene and a shootout with his six shooter. Wayne is his usual witty and charming self, with the swagger to match. However, you could have plugged in any number of younger action stars, and made a far better movie.
