Kickapoo State Park was the first park in the country to be located on a strip-mining site. Kickapoo State Park
Inside Kickapoo State Park
Whether you love wildlife or want to hike the trails, you can find plenty of things to do at Kickapoo. The mined land is now home to a forest of cottonwood, ash, and wild cherry trees. Kickapoo's waters make a perfect setting for boating or fishing. This site is also one of the few state parks in Illinois that allows scuba diving. Kickapoo State Park is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Chicago. From Interstate 74W, you need to take Exit 210. Continue to drive for 1 mile to the stoplight. You will turn left at the light and travel 2 miles north. At the Kickapoo Park sign, you want to make a left.

The park is open throughout the year. However, visitors to the campgrounds must leave by 10:00 p.m. There is no entrance fee for the park, but you will have to pay if you plan to spend the night at the campground.
